How it Works

What is a Vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a safe, simple, and permanent form of male contraception.

During the procedure, the vas deferens—tubes that carry sperm from the testicles—are cut, sealed, or blocked. This stops sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation. As a result, the semen no longer contains sperm, so pregnancy cannot occur.

Guide at a Glance

  • Initial Consultation
You’ll start with a consultation (in-person or phone) to ensure vasectomy is right for you. We’ll cover:

    • Your medical history

    • Family planning goals

    • Any questions or concerns

    • Detailed explanation of the procedure

    Preparing for the Day
Once you’ve booked your vasectomy, follow these steps:

    • Shave the scrotal area the evening before or morning of your appointment.

    • Shower on the day of the procedure for hygiene.

    • Wear comfortable underwear or bring supportive briefs.

    • Arrange transport – you shouldn’t drive yourself home.

    • Eat normally unless otherwise advised.

  • Avalon Medical performs the No-Scalpel Vasectomy, a modern, minimally invasive method that typically takes 15–30 minutes.

    Here’s what happens:

    1. Local anaesthetic is applied to numb the area – no general anaesthesia needed.

    2. A tiny puncture is made in the skin.

    3. The vas deferens (the tubes that carry sperm) are located, cut, and sealed.

    4. The small opening heals naturally.

Patients often describe only mild discomfort or pressure – no sharp pain.

  • At-Home Recovery

    • Avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting for about
      a week.

    • Ice packs can reduce swelling in the first 24 hours.

    • Wear snug underwear or a scrotal support to reduce movement and discomfort.

    • Mild pain, bruising, or swelling is normal for a few days.

    Aftercare & Follow-Up

    • We provide clear written aftercare instructions and access to our care team.

    • You can return to work in 1–3 days (depending on your job).

    • Sexual activity can usually resume after 7 days, but contraception is still needed.

Important: You are not sterile immediately. It takes around 8–12 weeks (or 20+ ejaculations) to clear sperm from your system.

You’ll be asked to provide a semen sample after this time to confirm success.

 FAQs

  • No. A vasectomy does not impact testosterone production, libido, or sexual performance. The procedure only blocks sperm from mixing with semen - everything else remains exactly the same.

  • A vasectomy should be considered permanent. While reversal surgery exists, it’s more complex, expensive, and success isn’t guaranteed. Consider this decision carefully.

  • Most patients return to light duties within 1-2 days. Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for about a week. Desk jobs can usually be resumed the next day.

  • The no-scalpel technique uses a special instrument to puncture the skin rather than making an incision. This means, less bleeding, bruising, and pain, with faster healing and no stitches required.

  • No, you do not need a GP referral.

  • The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, and most men report only mild discomfort, pressure, or tugging, not sharp pain. Recovery may include some soreness or swelling for a few days, but it's typically mild.

  • Sexual activity can usually resume after about 7 days, but make sure you feel comfortable and healed. You must use contraception until your follow-up semen test confirms that you're sterile.

  • Complications are rare. You might experience mild swelling, bruising, or discomfort, which typically resolves in a few days. Serious side effects like infection or long-term pain are very uncommon.

  • Yes. There is no legal requirement to have children before getting a vasectomy. However, because the procedure is permanent, we’ll discuss your decision carefully during your consultation to ensure it's the right choice for you.

  • No. We recommend having someone drive you home, as you may feel discomfort or light-headedness. It’s also important to rest right after the procedure.
